Obituary CONSTABLE CURRIE
Constable Eric James Currie, officer-in-charge of the Kaikoura Police Station, died in the Kaikoura Hospital yesterday after a month’s illness. He was 43. He joined the Police Force in 1943, and was stationed at Lyttelton and Christchurch before going to Kaikoura.
He is survived by his wife and three children. Constable Currie will be given a police funeral at Christchurch on Monday morning.
MR T. B. HEMPSTALK
A well-known citizen of Lyttelton, Mr Thomas Bertinus Hempstalk, died In Christchurch Mr Hempstalk, who was in his eightieth year, was born in Lyttelton in a cottage immediately over the entrance to the railway tunnel. He was educated in the port and went to sea in the Huddart, Parker steamships Westralia and Zealandia. After working for a time with the Lyttelton Harbour Board he was employed in the stdam' launches Canterbury and Purau. Later, as master of the small steamers Monica and John Anderson, in the Banks Peninsula trade, he became/a popular figure with residents of all the bays. He retired from the sea when the John Anderson, the last of the peninsula steamers, was taken off the run and sold. Mr Hempstalk was a member of the Lyttelton Borough Council for many years and once stood unsuccessfully for the mayoralty. During his term as councillor he was for some time chairman of the works committee. He interested himself in all aquatic sports in Lyttelton. He was a past-master of the Canterbury Kilwinning Masonic Lodge.
Mr Hempstalk is survived by his wife and two sons, Messrs B. Hempstalk and I. Hempstalk (Christchurch), and a daughter, Mrs A. T. Bell (Wbllington).
