HUNT AND BEUTH HEAD SENIOR CLUB AVERAGES

The senior cricket championship, won by Lancaster Park for the third successive season, was notable for the consistent bowling successes in most of the teams competing, and the remarkably few runs made by batsmen. The top batting aggregate was 548, by P. G. Z. Harris, of St. Albans, and this is the lowest figure for 14 years, save the 195455 season, when S. C. Guillen and G. G. Coull eached scored 540. This summer only two batsmen averaged more than 40. and in the 15 post-war seasons there has been only one to equal that; there were only two batting averages in excess of 40 in 1957-58. But this season six bowlers each took 40 wickets or more, and that has happened only once since the war: there were seven in 1948-49. There was, this season, no allrounder with A. W. Roberts’s habit of coming in the first two or three players in each list of averages. The most successful was A. R. Mac Gibbon (Old Collegians), who was thirteenth in the batting and seventh in the bowling. The St. Albans player, T. L. Jones, set a post-war record with his 70 wickets, and it is a total which has been exceeded only three times since district cricket began in 1905. The averages for the leading players are:—

Most catches in the field were taken by G. N. Gearry (W-U), 13. S C Guillen (StA) 11. N. Todd (StA) 10. B. Irving (LP) 10, and G. Perry (OC) 10. Old Collegians took most catches in the field—66. The leading wicket-keeper was G. McAulay (R). He took 17 catches and made two stumpings for a total of 19. Others with good totals were J. England (OC) with 16 catches and a stumping, E. R. Morrts (W-U), who had 13 catches and three stumpings, and N. L. Jones (StA), who in seven matches took 11 catches and made four stumpings.
