DARFIELD SCOUT AND GUIDE DEN
Building Is Opened Free .Of Debt The wholehearted support of the residents of Darfield towards the building of a suitable den for boy scout and girl guide activities, was testified to by the generous response made to the Q opeal of the chairman (Mr G. H. Steel) to the large gathering who attended the official opening of the den on Saturday, to open it free of debt. He commended all those who had worked so willingly to erect the building, and said there was still about £l5O to be found This amount was later announced to have been raised by the generous donations placed in the collection boxes during the afternoon. Visitors were present 'mm surrounding scout and guide troops. During the afternoon, scouts, n uides, brownies and cubs entertained with demonstrations and ’songs in their respective groups. A demonstration by the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade was also given during the afternoon. In addition to the member of Parliament for Selwyn (Mr J. K. McAlpine), who officially declared the den open, and who 'onv-atulated the people on yet another fine achievement for the district, other speakers were Sir Tosenh Ward, Provincial Commissioner of Scouts; Mrs J. H. Powell, Provincial Commissioner of Guides; Mr” M. E. Jepkins. 'Chairmen .of the Malvern County Council; and Mr G. H. Steel, chairman of the scout committee. '■ Afternoon tea was provided by the parents. In the evening the young oeople held a combined social in their new den.
