Angry Reaction By Two U.K. Papers
LONDON, March 4. The suggested establishment of West German bases in Britain was angrily received this morning by the “Daily Express” and the “Daily Worker.”
The “Daily Express” said in a leading article: “An astounding suggestion is being canvassed in N.A.T.O.—German bases for Britain. ‘‘Mr Walter Dowling, the United States Ambassador in Bonn, reveals that this possibility is being considered. It should not get beyond the stage of consideration “There should be no German bases in Britain. And no British bases in Germany.” A front-page - report by the “Daily Worker’s” foreign editor said: “Hitler’s old generals have had the nerve to demand military bases for the West German Army in Britain—bases from which to organise their planned war on the Soviet Union. “What is worse, however, the United States and British Governments have been calmly discussing these demands, together with the plans for West German bases in Franco’s Spain.”
