EISENHOWER’S TOUR
Criticism From Harriman
(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico), March 4.
A former Governor of New York State (Mr Averill Harriman) said last night he was disappointed over President Eisenhower’s tour of South America. Mr Harriman, a Democrat, called the trip a “tour of exchanges of compliments.” “I am unhappy Eisenhower had not presented any new or broader policies through which the United States can contribute to the social and economic growth of Latin America,” Mr Harriman told an interviewer from the ‘‘San Juan Star." He blamed Mr Eisenhower’s Republican administration for part of the strained relations between the United States and South America but expressed the hope that the President would make new proposals for easing these relations when he returned to Washington.
A San Diego, California, merchant had an ice plant make up 2000 snowballs for distribution in July as a sales promotion stunt, but they melted before he could hand them out.
