RECORD DIVE BY BATHYSCAPHE.—This photograph shows the bathyscaphe Trieste, being lowered into the water during a series of trial dives in the Mediterranean. The dives were in preparation for the record-breaking descent on January 23 to the bottom of the Marianas Trench, in the Pacific Ocean, a depth of 37,800 ft. The bathyscaphe, formerly owned by Professor Jacques Piccard, the Belgian scientist, and now the property of the United States Navy, also established the previous record dive of 24,500 ft.
