Products To Be Made In Canada
Earth-moving equipment designed in Christchurch is to be manufactured under licence in Canada. C. W. F. Hamilton and Company, Ltd., announced yesterday that an agreement had been signed with Northern Machine Works, Ltd., of Bathurst, New Brunswick, under which the Canadian company will manufacture loaders, cranes and hydraulic excavators.
Hamilton earth-moving equipment is already being manufactured in North America. The aircraft firm of Curtis Wright in the United States holds licences to manufacture several Hamilton products.
An executive of the Christchurch company said yesterday that aircraft manufacturers in Britain as well as the United States were turning to other products as orders for new aircraft had declined. Hamiltons were currently negotiating with several British firms, including aircraft manufacturers. There were prospects of entering other markets, he said. The Hamilton jet speed-boat is being made under licence in several overseas markets, including Canada. “But our business is mainly earthmoving equipment; the jet speedboat is merely a spectacular sideline,” he said.
