ADDINGTON MARKET General Easing In Store Stock Values

Values for store lambs and sheep were generally easier at Addington Market yesterday and there was a smaller entry. With the recent spell of nor’-westers and intense heat burning up the pastures some effect on store stock sales was to be expected and the freezing works dispute did little to inspire confidence in store lamb buyers’ minds.

Early annual draft four and five-year-old ewes from the tussock country are beginning to make their appearance but as yet it is a little early for any definite level of values to be established.

In the sale yesterday, store lambs were cheaper by about 2s a head over all for good quality lines, with plainer sorts at a greater discount. The best of the two-tooth ewes were only slightly cheaper and genuine breeding ewes were back by 2s to 3s a head.

The offering of 17,112 head, compared with 18,890 last week, was made up of 9868 store lambs, 2089 two-tooth ewes. 4749 adult ewes and 406 wethers. STORE LAMBS The store lamb market opened on a cautious note with values slightly easier and there was little animation in the bidding. Top lines of wether lambs which contained a fair proportion of killable weights were at a premium over the others and values for these held to about Is below last week’s rates. Secondary sorts, particularly those which needed some building up before going on to rape, were 2s to 3s a head cheaper. Towards the middle of the sale there was a slight hardening in values but this faded away again at the end. There were few good ewe lambs penned and these showed a similar trend.

The bulk of the offering was drawn from the North Canterbury hill country, with a fair number coming off the tussock. While there were some good lines in near forward condition penned, there were a lot of small and barely average quality sorts entered. The entry of 9868 head was much smaller and there were fewer buyers in the gallery. A pen of Corriedale wether lambs from R. G. Morris (The Gums), sold at 40s 6d and a pen of halfbred lambs from T. W. Bamford (Hurunui), made 40s. Top price for Down cross lambs went to R. Laybourn (Templeton), with 54 at 29s to 39s 6d. Gebbie Bros. (Teddington) had a sale at 37s and J. McGee (Springston) sold a pen at 37s 6d.

A. Prendergast (Rhodes's Bush), sold 97 Corriedale ewe lambs for 39s and E. D. Crampton (Cheviot) had a sale at 38s.

The best of the Romney and Romney cross wether lambs sold to 34s 6d, fine wools to 40s 6d and Down cross to 39s 6d. The fat and forward wether lambs generally sold from 36s to 40s 6d, with good at 32s to 35s 6d, average at 24s to 31s and small and inferior down to 14s.

TWO-TOOTH EWES With the exception of a few pens of well-sized sheep the two-tooth ewe entry was somewhat disappointing. A large proportion of the lines were small and under-developed sorts. Values followed the general trend and were back by 2s or 3s a head. The offering totalled 2089 compared with 698 last week. Buyers were selective and only the top pens were in demand. Sales of the other lines were not easy to make, except in buyers’ favour. Romneys sold up to 74s 6d and 73s for two pens on behalf of the Happy Home Trust (Halswell) and D. C. Anderson (Lakeside) sold 125 at 60s. Other sales were made from 36s 6d to 565. Corriedales mainly sold from 49s 6d to 56s for the best and average at 40s to 48s with others at 30s upwards. K, Fincham (Hawarden), 60 Corriedale at 565; D. C. Anderson (Lakeside), 125 Romney at 60s to 625. OLDER EWES The older ewe offering at 4789 head was double that of last week when 2345 were penned, but it was doubtful whether the number of genuine breeding ewes was increased. The majority of the sheep offered were freezing types and these were harder to sell with values cheaper by 2s to 3s a head, at rates comparable to the schedule, taking wool into account.

Some good breeding ewes of four and five-year status and with reasonable mouths and feet were sold with better competition, but prices also tended to be back, in this case by about 2s a head.

The buying gallery was much smaller, doubtless reflecting the hot weather and the further drying up of pastures. A line of 233 four and five-year Romneys from Ngapara Downs. Ltd. (Springbank) sold well at 37s to 38s and Corriedales from D. W. Lee (Kaikoura) fetched to 31s. For the balance the range would be 24s to 29s for good, with average at 16s to 225, and others bringing from 5s 6d to 15s. Sales included:—

The yarding of fat lambs numbered 386, as against 333 last week and for these values were maintained.
