FARMS IMPRESS VISITOR

Work On Good Land

“I have been impressed by the farming done on your good land.” said Mr Guy Stratten, an English farmer, who has been touring New Zealand with his wife. ‘‘Some of it is the best farming I have seen anywhere,” he said.

Mr Stratten said he had been struck by the amount of cultivation done over what he considered to be a small area of the country. He said he had noticed that there seemed to be a distinct difference between one farm and the next. One farm would look well cared for and another not. The land between Dunedin and Timaru was looking particularly good, he thought. The work done on second-grade hill country—country burned off every few years—was interesting, said Mr Stratten. Much of this land was not being used, but it was doubtful if it could be economically developed.
