CYCLING BRILLIANT RIDING SEEN IN THREE CLASSIC RACES

In perfect conditions a big crowd saw racing of the highest standard when the Combined Cycling Clubs held classic races at English Park last evening.

The Harrison Wheelrace was won by E. Gluestein, and the Tompson scratch race went to K. Brown. K. Jones was the winner of the Percy Cole memorial event.

The three scratch men, D. Swanston, L. Lock and K. Brown, were giving away 400 yards to T. Frew in the Harrison Wheelrace. The riders were spaced on 10 marks right round the track. From the gun the pace was on, and as was expected the riders from the 220 yard mark, which included last year’s winner, R. Harrison, set a solid pace and were up with the leaders after three laps. With three laps to go the back men were improving their position gradually. After a good turn of speed Lock withdrew with two laps and a half to go. Brown and Swanston carried on and were near the leaders with one lap and a half to go, but at this stage Swanston withdrew.

Going down the back straight for the last time, E. Gluestein, J. Williamson and Harrison started to move away from the field. Brown made a great effort to get up, but it was a little too much for him, although he got up for fifth place. The other three maintained the lead, and although Williams made a great effort he could not improve on the brilliant junior, Gluestein, who took the honours from Williams, with Harrison third.

There was no pace on for the first lap of the Tompson one mile scratch race, but there was

a slight improvement for the second lap. At the end of the first lap D. Swanston, who won this event two years ago, dropped his chain and was out of the race. At the bell R. Lucas led out at great speed, with K. Brown on his wheel. In the straight there was a great duel between these riders with Lock moving up fast on the outside. Brown had all that was required and in a grand finish held on to win by half a wheel from Gluestein. with Williams a similar distance away in third place. Williams was the winner of this event last year. The Percy Cole one-mile memorial handicap event for amateurs was divided into three heats.

The final was not up to expectations. The deplorable lapping of the back men with two laps to go completely ruined their chances of getting up to take part in the final sprint. B. A’Court, who won this event on the last two occasions, made a solo effort to get up, but the gap he had to bridge was too great. K. Jones, the winner, rode a very solid race and fully deserved his win. This is the first time that this race has been wdn by a junior. J. Swanston, who finished second, did very well, considering he has ridden very little on the track this season. AMATEUR EVENTS Half-mile A Grade Repechage Handicap.—First heat: G. Hill 1, J.
