Koalas Die In Bush Fire
(Rec. 10.30 p.m.)
MELBOURNE, January 20
Hundreds of Australia’s native bears, koalas, were burned to death in the fire last week in the Grampian mountains, 150 miles west of Melbourne, a district Game Department officer said tonight. About 520 koalas were liberated in the Grampians in 1957, and their numbers had increased considerably since, the officer (Mr G. Hope) said. He said most of the colony would have been wiped out by the fire.
Koalas are heavily protected in Australia, and extreme precautions are carried out to ensure that they do not become extinct.
