CITY COUNCIL CAMPAIGN

First Centre Open

Tomorrow

The City Council’s hydatid control campaign will begin tomorrow when the council will open its first treatment centre at a council reserve in Grants road, Papanui. The north-west sector of the city, which has a dog population of about 450, will be served by the centre, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dog owners concerned had already been requested by circular letter to take their dogs to the centre for treatment on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of this week, preferably on the first two days, said Mr J. R. McGeorge, the acting-Chief City Health Inspector, yesterday Owners prevented from attending the centre on any of the days allotted were asked to make their dogs available on the same days of next week at the second treatment centre at the council’s yard, 43 Edgeware road. “Dog owners are appealed to to make the campaign the success it deserves by complying with the notices they receive and by following the instructions outlined,” Mr McGeorge said. “The aim of the campaign—the complete eradication of hydatid disease in New Zealand—will surely commend itself to everyone.” Fee Opposed

Mr McGeorge said there had been some opposition already to the hydatid control fee, but it had to be remembered that the council had no say in this. It was fixed by the National Hydatids Control Council, which had been set up to cover the whole country. Quite heavy costs had to be met by the local authority in training and employing officers, equipping mobile clinics and establishing treatment centres. There was also some suspicion that the council’s control officers would not be as well qualified as a veterinary surgeon to administer the necessary drug to dogs, Mr McGeorge said. It had to be remembered, however, that the control officers of local authorities had received special instruction and become skilled in one specialised task.
