SYDNEY COOLER
Sydney is at present sweltering in a heatwave. However, Christchurch on Sunday had temperatures that rose as much as 8.9 degrees higher than the maximum recorded in Sydney on the same day. Sydney started the day with a temperature of 71.2 degrees at 6 a.m., while in Christchurch the day started with the comparatively low temperature of 52.3 degrees. The eighties had been reached in Sydney by 9 a.m. with 81.8 degrees. By this time in Christchurch it had reached only 67.7 degrees. From 11 o’clock in Christchurch the temperature rose steadily until a peak of 95.2 degrees was reached about 2.30 p.m. Sydney reached its peak temperature at 3.15 p.m. when the reading was 86.3 degrees.
After a southerly change, the temperature in Christchurch was 61 degrees at 6 p.m. In Sydney at the same time the temperature was still 82.6, and it was not until after 7 p.m. that it dropped to below 80. At midnight in Sydney the reading was still over 71 degrees.
