STATEMENT ON APARTHEID

African Protest To Netherlands (N.Z. Press Association—Copyrlaht) CAPE TOWN, January 12. The South African Government has formally protested to the Netherlands against a statement made by the Foreign Minister (Dr. Joseph Luns) on racial segregation in South Africa. . The protest said Dr. Luns statement “cannot but have an unfavourable reaction on friendly relations” between the two countries. The South African protest was directed against a Dutch Government statement last November which said, “South Africa s apartheid policy is incompatible with the sense of justice in th* Netherlands kingdom.” This statement was issued in connexion with Holland s stention that day from voting on a United Nations resolution on South Africa’s apartheid policy. It is said Holland abstained because of doubt whether the United Nations were entitled to deal with the domestic policy or South Africa.
