ASCENT OF MT. COOK

Eastern Ridge Route Used (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, January 12. Two climbers from Europe climbed Mount Cook by the eastern ridge on Monday, this being only the fifth time in history that the ascent has been made by this route. Climbing Mount Cook by the eastern ridge offers many hazards and requires high technical ability. The climb can only be made when snow and ice conditions are favourable.

The two climbers, Mr Von Terzi Eberhard and Mr Johaan Leightner, set out early on Monday and, after making the ascent, returned to the Haast hut on Monday night, travelling via the Linda Glacier. Arriving in New Zealand a few months ago, they have been climbing extensively in the Mount Cook area in recent weeks.

Other climbs in progress, reported tonight from The Hermitage, include two parties xo Mount Turnbull, one to Mount Malte Brun and three up Aiguille Rouge.
