CYCLING GOOD FINISHES AT COMBINED MEETING

There were thrills and excellent finishes at the combined cycling club’s weekly meeting at English Park last evening. D. Swanston, who with his partner, F. Treadrea (Auckland), won the six-day event at Auckland just more than a week ago, did a lap of honour. Swanston received a big ovation.

Brilliant riding by G. Hill brought the back markers up in the threequarter mile handicap final with one lap to go. This great effort by Hill seemed to take a great deal out of him, for he had no reserve strength for the last lap. His co-markers carried on and in a brilliant finish B. A’Court just managed to beat J. Beere on the line. R. Fowler led out with 220 yards to go in the final of the mile and a half handicap event, with A’Court and J. Beere on his wheel. A’Court Went round Fowler on the bottom banking, and in the straight Beere brought off an amazing sprint to go through and win by half a length, with Fowler three lengths back in third place. The secret scratch points race was full of interest, with the riders only knowing when there was a points sprint when the bell was rung. The sprints were very frequent, and many riders were caught napping. J. Beere kept himself well positioned, and shared many sprints. His keeping near the front rewarded him well, for he finished nine points ahead of his nearest rival, T. Weir. Cash Events One of the best finishes of the night was seen in the four-lap hat> dicap event. With less than a lap to go the back men were up with the field. Entering the straight they got through to the front and in a tight finish, L. Lock just managed to beat Swanston by inches, with Lucas a similar distance away, third. In the 12-lap scratch race, Swanston gave a great exhibition of riding over the last quarter-mile. Leading out just after the bell, he gradually increased his pace, until he reached the 220 yards mark, when he turned on an amazing sprint to hold off strong challenges from Lock and J. Williams. Swanston won by half a length. Results:—
