589 PATIENTS TREATED

Princess Margaret Hospital

Patients treated in Princess Margaret hospital since October 6, 1959, when the first patients were admitted, until midnight on January 11, numbered 589, according to the hospital’s medical records office. There have been four births at the hospital-special cases—for maternity cases are not regular admissions there; nor can casualties be treated at the new hospital. There is no provision for them until the next stage of the hospital is completed. Some persons, unaware of this, had gone to the hospital for casualty treatment and had had to be sent to the Christchurch hospital, a medical officer said yesterday. At present there are 92 patients in the hospital; 21 are women in the one gynaecological ward operating, and’the rest are medical cases in the three medical wards open.

The unit system by which one doctor and his assistants had all his patients in one ward was ideal if it could be worked properly and most satisfactory for the medical staff, a medical officer said.

Patients appeared to be enjoying the hospital facilities such as the bright surroundings of the ward, the hospital solarium and meals served to them on individual trays. The kitchen was a joy to work in, according to the dietitian in charge (Miss Margaret Till), who said the staff of seven—a male chef, one male cook and two female cooks and kitchen helpers—took a great pride in their work and in keeping the first-class equipment spotless.
