ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Improve Sharply; Fat Sheep Easier

All classes of fat cattle firmed at Addington Market yesterday. Steers and heifers were dearer by £3 a head, with the top beasts appreciating more, and cows lifted by a full 30s a head to equate the schedule rise of 5s per 1001 b announced yesterday. With a yarding of moderate proportions, the buying pressure was reflected in an improved sale for plainer types.

The few good store cattle offered sold soundly at improved rates and in the bull section a massive Friesian made £93 17s 6d, the best for some time. Although fat lambs were penned in smaller numbers, only the prime light to medium-weights were in demand at higher rates and heavier sorts met an erratic sale at about last week’s prices. Except for the tops of the young wethers, the fat sheep market was easier. Most of the ewes were cheaper by about 2s a head and older wethers sold erratically with a general easing of several shillings.

The sale yesterday was the opening of the twoday sales for the year with mainly fat stock being offered. Store lambs and sheep will be sold todav.

FAT LAMBS With a short yarding of 450 fat lambs, compared with 1120 last week, competition was increased for the best of the light to medium-weight prime quality yard values for these firmed by about 2s a head. Heavier butchers’ lambs sold on an erratic market but the over-all picture was little changed from last week’s rates. Quality generally was an improvement on the last few sales with fewer of the "tail end” unfinished sorts coming forward. The attendance of buyers was better and the reduced numbers made for brisker bidding on the best pens. The market was topped by H. Blair (Brookside) with a sale at 59s Id. W. Kearns (Ohoka) sold three at 57s Id and S. White (Waiau) one at 56s 7d. T. G. Maxwell (Motunau) sold six at 56s Id. Parkdale Farm, Ltd. (Halswell) had a good sale of 56 shorn lambs which made from 42s id to 43s id. Values were:— Prime heavy butchers’ lambs, 48s Id to 54s id, with odd sales to 59s Id. Prime medium lambs, 43s Id to 47s Id. Prime light lambs, 39s Id to 42s Id. Plain lambs, 35s Id to 38s Id. Sales included:— New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Association Ltd., sold: on account of estate James Stevenson (Flaxton), 44 at 43s Id to 49s Id; L. Burney (Motukarara), 19 at 36s Id; T. G. Maxwell (Motunau), 6 at 56s Id; A. E. FAT SHEEP Except for the few best quality wethers which appreciated by up to 2s a head, the bulk of the fat sheep yarding could be quoted back by 2s to 3s a head. Quality generally was varied. The entry totalled 4018, compared with 3413 last year. Young wethers were yarded in increased numbers and buyers, especially in the latter half of the sale, were selective in their buying and most lines were down by 2s to 4s a head. The very nest were equal to the tops of last week and the top price of 72s Id was the best for several months. Older wethers met an erratic sale. With the larger entry of young wethers this class suffered from lack of competition. Two and. threeshear wethers were back by 2s and 3s a head and the easing on the balance ranged from 3s to 6s a head. Ewes were generally cheaper by about 2s a head with the plainer sorts hard to sell. The better class of ewe with a good mouth had a better sale, with values holding to late rates or a shade better with support from grazier competition. Heavy ewes also tended to be cheaper. Top price in the wether section went to L. C. Banks (Greenpark), with 14 at 72s Id, 13 at 69s Id and 10 at 67s Id. S. A. McCartin, Ltd. (Southbridge), sold 8 wethers at 67s Id and A. M. Saunders (Mitcham) had a sale at 66s Id. The ewe sale was topped by M. G. Thorne (Oxford) with 8 ewes at 21s Id, and 43 at 18s Id. H. C. Barr (Prebbleton) sold a number of ewes at 20s Id. and A. J. Morris (Rakaia) sold a pen at 18s Id. Values were:— Extra prime young wethers, 56s Id to 67s Id, with sales to 72s Id. Prime medium young wethers, 48s Id to 55s Id. FAT CATTLE All classes of fat cattle improved in value with a moderate yarding of 313 head, compared with 532 last week. Quality generally was mediocre, although some excellent cattle were included. Pressure of competition for the better sorts was reflected in the better sale for the plainer cattle Over all there was a general rise Of about £3 a head on last week’s rates, and a fair amount of beef changed hands at an estimated £8 per 1001 b. Steers and heifers lifted sharply by about £3 a head, and in cases, more for top beasts. Cows firmed by a good 30s a head, reflecting the improvement in the schedule for this class of beef. Dairy Cattle

There was a brisk demand for all classes of dairy cattle and with only 18 head yarded there was an undersuply. Quality was improved on recent sales and competition lifted values for all sorts. Six Friesian and Shorthorn cross cows in profit and due to calve again in June/July brought from £3l to £36 at an average of £32 13s 4d A Friesian cross cow of obviously top quality made £63 10s, a brindle with calf fetched £56 10s, and a line of four making to this figure averaged £6O 7s 6d. The balance ranged from £27 for a small heifer and calf to £35 for average. VEALERS With a shorter yarding of about 100 head, there was a decided sharper air to the bidding and all classes participated in a general rise of £2 to £3 a head. In the opinion of an experienced observer, veal was at its dearest for many years, and hd valued some of his purchases at £lO per 1001 b. With the keen competition, even the plainer sorts were easier to sell, although this class was well in the minority. Quality over all was very good, the offering including some 35 calves of a high standard. Best runners firmed sharply to sell at £33 17s 6d to £3B 2s 6d; medium runners at £29 2s 6d to £32 17s 6d; small runners at £23 2s 6d to £27 17s 6d; large suckers made from £22 2s 6d to £25 7s 6d; medium suckers from £lB 7s 6d to £2l 7s 6d; small suckers at £l6 7s 6d to £l7 17s 6d; large calves sold at £lB 7s 6d to £22 2s 6d; medium at £l3 7s 6d to £l7 17s 6d; small at £9 3s 6d to £ll 7s 6d. and bobby from 68s upwards.

FAT PIGS The porker entry, which was of medium size, comprised mainly good types. Competition from the outset was very keen and all best quality pigs remained at the advanced rates of last week. The bacon entry did not include any -pigs from outside districts, and was the best market for several years, and best quality sorts improved by 10s to 20s a head. Only overfat types were definitely not wanted among the baconers. The chopper entry was the smallest for several weeks, and included some very big pigs. Here also the market showed an improvement of up to 20s a head. Values were:— Light porkers, £6 7s 6d to £7 14s 6d. Medium porkers, £7 17s 6d to £8 7s 6d. Heavy porkers, £8 9s 6d to £9 9s 6d. Light baconers, £lO Is 6d to £ll 3s 6d. Medium and heavy baconers, £ll 14s 6d to £l3 18s 6d. Choppers, £8 Is to £l7 3s 6d. STORE PIGS The entry of store pigs was much larger than that of last week, but the quality was not nearly as good. There was a fairly good attendance of buyers, and although competition was good, buyers worked on very strict limits. Values over the first half of the sale were easier by 4s to 6s a head However, over the last race prices improved to almost the good rates of last week. Values were:—

Small weaners, 50s to 58s. Best weaners. 62s to 80s. Slips, 81s to 90s. Small and medium stores, 95s to nos. Large stores, 112 s to 120 s.
