SOUTH CANTERBURY COMPETITION
Old Boys Gain Lead On First Innings (From Our Own Reporter)
TIMARU, January 10. On a dry and fiery wicket at Ashbury Park on Saturday, the competition leaders, Old Boys, established a first innings lead against West End. The opening batsman, M. Purcell, set a good example to those following him, how to handle the sasvajr ® side was dismissed for 88 runs. Purcell batted neatly for 33 runs before being caught off N. Dellow's bowling. Old Boys lost two cheap wickets, both R. Taiaroa and W. McDonald falling victim to the bowling' of 3. Dore. However, R. Bowden, who had something of a charmed life at times, stepped up the scoring. Runs came freely from his bat towards the end of his innings, and he was 101 before being bowled by E. McEwen. Old Boys declared at 184 for seven wickets and, in the second innings, West End were 20 runs without loss. At the Gardens ground, the medium pace swing bowler, B. R. Taylor, ripped through the Star batting structure to take all 10 wickets—eight clean bowled—at a cost of only 18 runs. Star was out for only 73 runs in reply to High School’s 91. Hitting up 151 runs, Old Boys colts had dismissed nine Timaru batsmen for 119 runs at stumps. For the colts, the highest scorers were P. Peterson 34 and C. Rogers 36. B. Foster took two excellent catches in slips for Timaru, and M. McKimmie took a fine catch in the long field.
