ROWING INTER-CLUB RACES FOR NEW TROPHY

Two inter-club races were rowed at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday afternoon, in conjunction with the Wanganui Collegiate School-Christ’s College eight-oared race. The main event was tire open handicap single sculls race for a trophy presented to the Canterbury Rowing Association by the Haberfield Rowing Club during its visit to Christchurch last year. The trophy was allocated to a special handicap single sculls race, to be rowed annually, Saturday’s races being the first. Twelve entries from the Avon. Canterbury, Union, and Cure clubs were received from scullers of all classes using both best and best and maiden class boats. The standard of single sculling has improved immeasurably over the last two or three seasons, and Saturday’s races showed that local scullers will soon do well in national competition.

A race for novice four-oared crews was also held, the final of which resulted in a close contest between the Union and Avon No. 1 crews.
