Kilts Swirl, Pipes Skirl At Methven Band Contest

To the stirring skirl of the pipes, nine Highland Bands parched through the streets of Methven on Saturday morning the Show Grounds, where the annual Provincial Pipe Band contest was held in ideal conditions. The contest attracted much public interest and early in the afternoon, the crowd was estimated to be about 2000 persons. A highlight on the programme was the staff flourishing event, which wa s won by the Scottish Society of New Zealand Pipe Band. The standard of dress was very good, except that some of the lilts drooped at the back, said the dress judge (Mr S. Chisholm, of Christchurch). “In many cases, the garters were not quite tight enough, and when hey stamped their left foot to a halt, their dockings were inclined to move down their legs,” he said. The music judge (Mr A. Guild, of Wellington) said it was obvious that Canterbury possessed some fine pipe bandsmen. He was particularly impressed by the performance given by the band of the New Zealand Scottish Regiment. Mr Guild said the playing during the drum majors’ display was a little disappointing, and considered the manoeuvres were too difficult to allow full concentration on playing. The chief military judge (Major E. Boyle) said the bands were well up to the required provincial standard in both drill and precision marching. The standard

was maintained throughout the day, and there was a definite improvement in dressing and covering which had been brought about by the slower tempo of the street jjarch he said. The drumming judge was Mr I. Levy, of Wellington.

Speaking at the presentation of ■ophies on Saturday evening, Mr . G. Gerard, M.P., congratulated le organising committee and the andsmen for the “good spirit of
