NEW CHURCH IN BRYNDWR

Dedication On

Sunday

The new St. David’s Methodist Church on the comer of Wairakei road and Spalding street in the North Bryndwr district, has been completed, and will be opened and dedicated on Sunday by the chairman of the North Canterbury Synodal District, the Rev. V. R. Jamieson. Associated with Mr Jamieson will be the Rev. N. P. Larsen, minister of St John’s Church, Bryndwr, the mother church of St. David's, and other church dignitaries. With an area of 3250 square feet and seating for nearly 300 persons, the church cost between £6OOO and £7OOO. Construction is of a portal timber frame with brick veneer facing. The architect was Mr .C, B. Wells, and the builders were Messrs Guthrey and Podmore. The building is the first stage in a scheme which ultimately will include a church for worship only, another set of buildings a mile and a half away, and a parsonage. Economy, and the provision of facilities for all church organisations, until the major scheme is completed, were the main considerations in designing the building. Prevision for Extension Provision has been made for future extensions. Small cubicles for use as Sunday school classrooms are incorporated. Along one side of the hall pivoted .’ ors may be closed to form a flush wall and make several small rooms. A temporal y sanctuary will later be extended to form a stage with dressing-rooms on either side. The platform to the sanctuary folds upwards to form a flush panel with the wall, closing it off from the main auditorium. Entrance to the main hall is through a vestibule, with cloakrooms, toilets, and a kitchen opening from jt. At the rear of the church is a primary department. The growing Sunday school has been catered for in two private homes and a garage in the district, and a fireside group of the young married women has been meeting in private homes. The property was • purchased soon after the appointment of Mr Larsen, through the financial assistance of the home and Maori mission department of the New Zealand Methodist Church. From the beginning the project was sponsored by the St. John’s Church and the board of trustees.
