VEHICLE TESTING STATION

Visit By Queensland Deputy Premier

Enthusiasm for establishing a municipal vehicle testing service in Queensland was shown by the Deputy Premier of Queensland (Mr K. J. Morris), when he inspected the Christchurch City Council testing station in Lichfield street, yesterday.

“That’s wonderful.’’ said Mr Morris, as the demonstration car came to a abrupt halt on the brake testing machine. Within two hours of his arrival at the Christchurch airport, Mr Morris was shown the testing station, by the Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar), and the District Officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan). For the demonstration Mr Kellar’s car was put through the test normally required for a warrant of fitness. It proved completely satisfactory. Questions Mr Morris asked included the cost of the station, and the number of cars tested each year. Mr Kellar told him of the council’s plans to install another threelane testing station in Cranford street Not including the cost of the section, -the station was expected to cost about £38,000, he said. ,

“Obviously 1 am not trying to assimilate everything, because if we do start a similar service—which we will —we will have to know about it in detail,” said Mr Morris. ‘ He said he had been reading and hearing about the service for the last three years. “I have also seen similar services in England and America. This has made me more and more determined to see the service installed in Queensland.” he said.

“All I can say is that I am coming to New Zealand for a holiday in a year’s time. I will then visit the station again—to compare it with our’s,” he said.
