RACING Canterbury- Trained Horses Win £33,340

In what has been a generally leaner season for them so far than the last, Canterbury-trained horses have won £33,540 since August 1.

Fourteen trainers have prepared the winners of £lOOO or more. J. C. Tomkinson, trainer of Cadiz and Braganza, is a clear leader with four wins and four placings worth £3465.

Although Tomkinson has a lead of more than £looo—about the same as J. S. Shaw’s at this stage of last season—several trainers have had more wins. J. L. Barr, in second place, had had eight, and the Orari trainer, L. H. Pratt, seven. Altogether the province’s horses have won 101 races. Cadiz, with three wins and two placings worth £2755, is the leading horse. One surprise is the failure of several of last season’s highranking trainers to maintain their positions. J. S. Shaw, the leader, has dropped back to third, W. P. Hogan has gone from third to thirteenth, and P. H. R. Andrews, who was sixth at the end of last season, is not in the first 15 so far Tomkinson was a close second to Shaw last season. He trains a few class horses for a limited '■lientele, and has a high percentage of wins to starts. With Cadiz he has won three races this season—the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton, the Dunedin Guineas, and the Stewards’ at Riccarton. Tomkinson’s only other winner this season was Copenhagen. Copenhagen won a narrow victory over Juventas in the Heathcote Handicap at the Grand National meeting and was retired immediately afterwards.

J. L. Barr, whose somewhat larger team has won £2305, is second to Tomkinson. Barr’s best winners are the hack Quick Time and Royal Halyard. Motueka's Record Following Barr is J. S. Shaw winner of four races and 12 placings worth £lBBO. Slightly more than half of this was won by the Faux Tirage gelding Motueka which has not won, but has compiled a useful string of minor placings—including a second in the Metropolitan—worth £970. Last season Motueka was Shaw’s best winner, contributing nearly two-thirds of his earnings. Shaw’s winners this season are Tintage] and the two-year-old Stradbroke.

Fourth to Tomkinson. Shaw and Barr is the Orari trainer, L. H Pratt, a consistent winner around the Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast circuit. Pratt’s team has won seven races and £1,668. The hardy galloper Appreciate contributed £905 of this, with three wins and three placings. His

latest win was in the Weld Handicap at Blenheim on November 21

Pratt is the most successful trainer from outside Riccarton. The only others in the top 14 are M. R. Jones (ninth), W. P. Hogan (thirteenth) and T. W. Reilly (fourteenth). Trainers of the winners of £lOOO or more are:—
