BRASS BAND MARCH
Dedication To Mr Skoglund “Marduk,” a ms,rch for a ceremonial occasion, composed by Mr T. J. Kirk-Burnnand, music master at Papanui High School, and dedicated to the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) was played for the first time in public by the Papanui High School band when the Minister opened the school’s new wing yesterday. The appropriateness of the title was felt when it was explained that “Marduk,” in the Babylonian language, meant “a bountiful god.” Conducted by Mr Kirk-Burn-nand, the band played the short but interesting work with plenty of verve and spirit, especially in a rousing forte passage, to which peaks of interest were lent by cymbal clashes. Later, Mr Skoglund thanked Mr Kirk-Burnnand for dedicating "a very fine march” to him. The school was fortunate to have as its music master a man whose reputation in the brass band movement extended throughout New Zealand,” Mr Skoglund said. The school’s senior choir also sang an anthem, “From the Rising of the Sun,” by Gore Ouseley, accompanied by the band.
