Christmas Party
Carols by candlelight sung by red-cloaked choristers in the gallery of the Provincial Council building began the Pan Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association Christmas party last evening. The president, (Miss Mary MacLean) welcomed the guests and made special mention of the Maoris from the Tuahiwi and Hapaki communities who were present. They included Mrs E. Paahi and three of her daughters, Mrs T. H. Tirikatene, Mrs R. H. Manawatu and Miss Aroha Paahi, who replied to the welcome on behalf of the Tuahiwi Maoris, and Mr and Mrs F. G. Briggs, of Lyttelton, representing the Rapaki Maori community.
Also present were many Colombo Plan students, in national costume. The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mr E. B. E. Taylor, spoke to the guests, emphasising the international goodwill promoted at the party. - » Miss M. Nepia sang three songs in Maori, accompanied by Mr R. Tirikatene. Miss Edna Neville gave two recitations, and Mrs W. E. Olds accompanied Mr I. Carmine and Miss Janet Buckley, who each sang three songs. The hall of the Provincial building was decorated with holly and red candles, posy bowls of roses, love-in-the-mist, and dianthus and a large bowl of peony roses, lilies, tritonas, and carnations.
