DEER MENACE IN NEW ZEALAND

Minister’s Statement Criticised (New Zealand Press Association) LEVIN, December 2. A recent statement by the Minister of Forests (Mr Tirikatene) that “either the deer go and we stay, or we go and the deer stay,” might sound good to the average person, but it was more theatrical than realistic. This is the view of Mr L. G. Sayer, president of the Horowhenua branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association. The policy of the Minister’s department had allowed deer to become the menace Mr Tirikatene now declared them to be, said Mr Sayer. The areas in which he said deer were doing damage had been closed to stalkers while hundreds of them were not only willing but pleading to be allowed to shoot there. Fire in the forests was a hazard, said Mr Sayer, but this danger was small with members of the association, who at all times respected the wishes of land owners. The main risk was with persons who illegally entered the areas.
