ORDER PLACED FOR HOPS
Irish Brewers Of Stout
(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, Dec. 2. The Nelson Hop Marketing Committee’s brokers, have received, advice from Arthur Guinness and Son, of Dublin, that the firm is interested in buying part of New Zealand’s hop surplus this season.
‘‘We have heard that the New Zealand Government has granted token licences to the extent of 10 per cent, on 1956 imports of Guinness’ stout,” the firm wrote. ‘‘We think it would be equitable to buy New Zealand hops on the same basis, and you may, therefore, take it that we shall be prepared to consider offers of any surplus hops from your 1960 crop up to a limit of 150 cwt.” A bale of hops weighs about 3cwt. Mr B. T. Rowling, chairman of the marketing committee which has 700 bales of last year’s hops lying unsold in Nelson, said today that he was pleased to find Guinness still interested in New Zealand hops. “It is now certain that the import legislation which did not allow Guinness stout to be imported into New Zealand was the reason why our hops could ‘ not be sold to Dublin,” said Mr Rowling. “It is true that there was a large world over-produc-tion last year and prices were low overseas. Yet, as soon as import restrictions are eased ever so little, an offer to purchase comes to hand immediately.”
