“Problems For U.S. Cup Captain” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyrightj NEW YORK, December 2. Alex. Olmedo’s move into the professional ranks yesterday would mean added problems for the next United States Davis Cup team captain, the president of the United -States Lawn Tennis Association (Mr Victor Denny) said in Seattle last night. The Peruvian champion of America’s Davis Cup squad signed a contract yesterday with Jack Kramer which guarantees him a minimum of 35,000 dollars, and which could bring him nearly 100,000 dollars for the first year, U.P.I. reported. Mr Denny, commenting on Olmedo's contract with Jack Kramer, said, American Associated Press reported: “Of course, this move has been rumoured for most of the last six months. Alex, is really a fine boy, and I wish him every success in his professional appearances. What effect this will have On our Davis Cup plans and any solution that will be necessary will be up to Perry Jones’ successor.” Mr Denny added: “Jones has indicated he- will not continue another year and the next captain of the United States Davis Cup team will be named by my successor, George Barnes of Chicago, next year. It isn’t our prerogative ’to tell any 'boy he shouldn’t turn professional. “Jack 1 Kramer, is a matter of fact, has done a great deal of good for amateur tennis. His professionals perform for people all over the world, permitting thousands of people to see good tennis who ordinarily wouldn’t have the opportunity to do so.”
Perry ’Jones was present when Kramer announced, with Olmedo at his side, that he had guaranteed the Peruvian a minimum of 35,060 dollars for the first year. Janes, who nursed Olmedo to the ' Wimbledon champion’s greatest victories, commented: “1 certainly wish Alex, all the success in the world in his professional career and feel certain he will have it.”
