Housing
Sir, —THie recommendation by Mr H. C. Holden to the Department of Industry and Commerce includes the provision of a greatly increased proportion of flats mainly in central urban areas which would first be cleared of existing buildings. In Christchurch the clearing away of homes, flats, and apartment houses has led to introduction of heavy industry, commercial, and entertainment premises among established homes. What records are kept, if any, of demolitions and substitutions of this nature rather than the recommended and required building of flats or high-density housing. Yours, COMPARISON. December 2, 1959.
