Hungary And Spain
Sir, —Whatever happenings past and present may be displeasing as regards Hungarian affairs, the manner of focusing public attention suggests that using the United Nations forum as a sounding board is more for anti-com-munist propaganda than to change the internal conditions of Hungary. There is another part of Europe where bloody repression has occurred and would happen again should democratic inspired rebellion show itself. The existing Franco dictatorship
came to power with the help of Hitler and Mussolini and the hypocritical ‘ ‘non-intervention’ ’ policy of Britain, France and other countries which, in the Spanish Civil War denied military supplies to the elected Spanish Government. We get little news through ordinary channels concerning the Franco repression of the Spanish people, but it is evident that without United States military supplies and economic aid Franco would topple. Are there powerful influences which can limelight Hungary but dimlight Spain for their own purposes?—Yours, etc., STUDENT OF AFFAIRS. December 1, 1959.
