CURRENT NOTES

Hospital Friends.— The Friends of the Hospital held a Christmas party in St. Andrew’s hall recently. Specially-invited guests included the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr L. C. L. Averill) and Mrs Averill, the Lady Superintendent of the Christchurch Public Hospital (Mrs M. Chambers), the Lady Superintendent of Princess Margaret Hospital (Sister J. Taylor), the Mayoress (Mrs G. Manning) and matrons and staff members of other North Canterbury hospitals. Miss N. Gillespie’s ensemble provided musical entertainment.

Riccarton Mothers’ League.— St. Matthew’s drama club performed a play at the break-up party of the Riccarton branch of the League of Mothers. Community Christmas carol singing and solo items by members of the League choir ended the meeting. Catholic Women’s League.— Mrs John Kilne, of California, spoke to the Catholic Women's League at a morning tea held recently. Her subject was “The American Housewife.” Mrs J. P. Donnelly presided. Otago Ex-Pupils Party.—A Christmas party was held by the Otago High School Ex-Girls’ Association and the Otago Boys’ High School Old Boys’ Association in the Jellicoe Hall last evening. Guests were received by the president of the association (Mrs Ainslie Lawn) and the president of the Old Boys’ Association (Mr J. A. Bretherton). Among the specially invited guests were representatives of kindred organisations in the city. Sydenham Mothers’ League.— Mrs R. J. Tomes showed film slides of Holland at the recent meeting of the Sydenham branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs A. Tinson presided. Christmas gifts were presented to members present Canterbury Women’s Club.— The garden circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club re-elected Mrs C. G. Manhire director at its annual meeting. The following won awards for the year:— Erasmusen Cup, Mrs E. Seward; Denise Watson Cup, Mrs L. C. Wood; most points for the year, Mrs O. D. Sewell; gladioli, dahlias, and chrysanthemums, Mrs Sewell; roses, Mrs A. H. Hayman; daffodils, Miss A. M. Black. Piano duets were played by Mesdames H. Reeves and J. Mason and a bracket of songs was sung by Mrs D. Bishop. R. and P. Women.— The following officers were elected at the recent annual meeting of the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club:— President, Miss S. Lilly; vicepresident, Mrs N. Mclntosh; secretary, Miss G. Crisp; treasurer, Miss B. Wood; conveners, Mrs V. McGee, Misses F. Edwards, T. Eldridge, D. Bridgman, H. Melville, and V. Kettle. For Crippled Children.— Two small girls from Shirley, Who raised 6s 8d for the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society recently by giving a play on their front lawn, have now helped to give the society another £1 6s. With other children they gave another play and sold sweets. When they handed their money to Miss C. Kent, acting secretary of the branch, they told her there would be another play before Christmas.
