Round Australia By Taxi

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, December 1.

An American couple who travelled to Australia for the Melbourne Cup hired a taxi in a Melbourne street one night and asked the driver to take them round Australia.

The couple. Mr and Mrs Shepherd Lee, of Santa Barbara, California, have just returned to Melbourne. They will sail for home in the Mariposa today. Mr Lee, a millionaire, paid the driver £ASOO for the taxi hire, plus his expenses for a month. From Melbourne they drove to Adelaide, where they installed the driver in a hotel while they flew to Perth, Darwin, Alice Springs, and back to Adelaide—in three days. Then they drove from Adelaide through outback South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales to Mount Isa and Cairns, in the north of Queensland, and back to Sydney. Mr Lee said he and his wife insisted on travelling by an ordinary taxi because it gave them a better opportunity to chat to typical outback Australians.
