ROAD DEATHS IN NOVEMBER

26 Killed: Total For Year Now 316 (New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. Twenty-six people died in November road accidents, the Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison) said today. Eut this was five fewer than the 31 who died in November last year. Road deaths so far this year total 316, compared with 353 for the first 11 months last year. Dominion-wide fitness checks made recently showed a number of vehicles were on the road with unsafe tyres, Mr Mathison said. Sixty-five per cent, of defects in more than 11,000 vehicles examined were due to worn and unsafe tyres. Mr Mathison said worn and smooth tyres were a real danger, often leading to “blow-outs,” inefficient and uneven braking and skidding. Drivers had been killed and hurt while they were fixing punctures.
