Racing SECOND EARL AND YEMAN

Preparation For New Campaign "The Press’ Special Service AUCKLAND. December 1. The top-class performers Second Earl and Yeman attended the training at Takanini this morning to continue their preparations for important races in the summer. Neither was asked for much. Second Earl went easily over six furlongs on the No. 2 grass in Imin 28 l-ssec and Yeman was kept to slow pacework on the plough. Each looked in bright, healthy condition. Yeman and Second Earl, with their trainers I. J. Tucker (Yeman) and W. F. Clifton (Second Earl), returned last month from Australia where they were campaigned during the winter and early spring months. The last time Yeman raced was when he finished seventh in the Williamstown Cup on November 14, and Second Earl's last start was at Rosehill on October 27 when he ran second with 9-2 over six furlongs. Altogether Second Earl had a very successful trip because he won the Doomben Ten Thousand and the W. J. Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm. He was also beaten narrowly in the £lO.OOO Stradbroke Handicap going under by a short head to Grey Ghost. Railway Handicap

Second Earl’s next major task will be the Railway’Handicap at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day and one of the events for which he has been nominated meantime is the Shaw Stakes at Paeroa on December 19. Yeman did not do so well on his latest trip to Sydney and Melbourne and it seemed that he was on hand too late for the big spring races. He has not been nominated for any events before the Auckland summer meeting and whether he tackles another Auckland Cup will depend probably on the progress he makes in his training work in the meantime.

This morning Yeman was ridden by “an old acquaintance,” R. J. Jury, who won the Auckland Cup on him in 1956 and the Wellington Cup in 1958. Second Earl was ridden by R. G. Forbes, his jockey in a succession of two-year-old victories during the 195758 season.
