Boxing LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE BOUT
World Champion Confident (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) HOUSTON (Texas), December 1. The world lightweight champion Joe Brown predicted flatly today that he would knock out the British boilermaker Dave Charnley in a hurry tomorrow night in his eighth defence of his world title. The bout, scheduled for 15 rounds, has Brown a 7-4 on favourite. “I learned something going 15 rounds with (Kenny) Lane,” Brown said, “and I proved it because other southpaws (left handers) didn't go more than two or three rounds with me since then. I feel like I ctn take Charnley out in the same distance." Southpaw Charnley is the British Empire lightweight champion. Brown’s prediction that the bout would end in a hurry bore out the promise of the records of the fighters. Charnley has had only 39 fights compared with Brown’s 103. has scored 20 knockouts in winning 33 times, and Brown has gained 35 of his 75 victories by knockouts.
Experience is on Brown’s side, while age will be with Charnley. Recently released from the British army, Charnley is 24. Brown is 33.
