Two graded scratch races and a boys’ race were held at Halswell this week.
G. Hill for the third time in succession won the A grade. Also for the third successive week the B grade riders recorded a better time than the A grade riders. The fast time by the B grade can be attributed to the excellent riding of C. Hibberd and B. Berry, who were really prepared to make it a race. These two cleared out from the field and did not look like being caught. So well did they ride that Berry, who finished second, one second behind Hibberd, was imin 6sec clear of D. Wood, who was third.
The boys’ race is becoming extremely popular, and each week the number of starters grows. This week there were 17 starters. The race was won by O. Blanch from W. Newton, with D. Gutry taking fastest time. To add further interest among these boys there is a points competition for placing over a series of four weeks. Monday brought the finish of the first four-weekly series, and D. Gutry, with 13 points, led W. Newton (9) and G. Meyerhoff (7). A new series will begin next week. Results were:— A Grade Scratch.—G. Hill 1, R. Fowler 2, W. Hensley 3. Time, 27min 35sec. B Grade Scratch.—C. Hibberd 1, B. Berry 2, D. Wood 3. Time, 27min 13sec.
Boys’ Race.—O. Blanch 1, W. ton 2, B. Burgess 3. Fastest time D. Gutry.
