MR ROBINSON ELECTED
Mayoral Contest At Auckland
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 1. The Auckland mayoralty has been won by Mr D. M. Robinson by 1039 votes and he will take over from the sitting Mayor (Mr K. N. Buttle) tomorrow.
Ten days of tension following Mr Robinson’s narrow lead of 255 on the preliminary count was brought about by an adding mistake. The discovery of the error, as the official count proceeded last night, put the issue beyond doubt. In adding together returns from 12 separate booths at the Remuera library polling place on election night, a deputy-returning officer credited Mr Buttle with 700 too many votes. The discrepancy showed up in the official count and electoral, staff traced it to the library. The official count gave Mr Robinson (Independent) 18.980 votes and Mr Buttle (Citizens’) 17,941.
