LIQUOR WITH MEALS
Travel Association Attitude
(New Zealand Press Association/ WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. If the hotel industry supported the restaurants on the question of liquor with meals, instead of seeking to be the first with this facility, it might be possible to get somewhere, said Mr M. Laurie at a meeting of the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association, today. The president (Mr J. Newman) said the association did not support a general issue of liquor licences to restaurants of all types or the sale of all types of liquor. There should be a high standard of control and licences should be granted only to approved restaurants.
“Issues should be carefully examined, and some tribunal or committee set up to decide whether a place is entitled to a licence,” said Mr Laurie. It was decided a small committee of the association should be appointed to iron out misconceptions that had arisen on the question and to decide on a common ground of approach to the Parliamentary committee of inquiry into the licensing laws.
