Electra Christened With Champagne
(New Zeatana Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 1.
Tasman Empire Airways’ Electra Aotearoa was christened with champagne at Whenuapai this morning, and with 71 passengers left at 11 a.m. on the inaugural flight of the turbo-jet service to Australia. The aircraft landed on its return at the airport at 8.30 p.m., after travelling 2684 air miles with a twohour stop in Sydney. The guests aboard the Electra when it took off in brilliant sunshine included the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Mathison) and Mrs Mathison, the Postmas-ter-General (Mr Moohan), the chairman of directors of T.E.A.L. (Sir Leonard Isitt) and airline, newspaper and travel agency representatives.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain J. R. McCrane, with Captain D. W. G. Keesing as co-pilot.
