ATTACK MADE ON GIRL
Man Returned To Mental Hospital (New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 23.
Brian William Hayman, aged 30, declared criminally insane in early 1951, after attempting to murder a Mangere farmer with a hammer, was arrested by police at Otahuhu 14 days ago after a night attack on an 18-year-old girl. Hayman was legally at large. In August last year, Hayman was released on probation from Tokanui Psychiatric Hospital, near Te Awamutu, on the recommendation of medical specialists. Between 1951 and his release, Hayman escaped from mental hospitals four times. After the Otahuhu attack, Hayman appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland, on November 9, charged with assault on a female. He was remanded in custody for a week. In the meantime, the police advised officials of the Justice Department of the circumstances of the arrest. The Minister of Justice (Mr Mason) then revoked Hayman’s probation licence, and directed that he be returned to Auckland Psychiatric Hospital. Hayman did not appear when the case was again called, and Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., dismissed it for want of prosecution.
