RUNWAY AT MOMONA
Agreement On Tender (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. The Government and the Dunedin City Council have agreed on the acceptance of a tender for the construction of the Dunedin airport at Momona, and a contract will be signed as soon as financial negotiations between the Government and the council have been completed. The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) said today that construction costs are to be shared equally by the Government and the council.
There are still some financial details to be approved before the successful tenderer for the initial contract can begin work, and it is expected that these will be completed early next week.
The contract to be let includes the construction of the airport’s runway and taxiway. The bitumen runv.ay will be 5600 ft long and 150 ft wide. The work involves the shifting and placing of more than a quarter of a million cubic yards of earth and other material, and the installation of water supply, sewage, and drainage facilities.
