GOLF Canada Cup Within Australia’s Grasp

(N.Z. Pres* Association— Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 20. . Australia had the 1959 Canada Cup trophy within its grasp at the end of the third round of the 72-hole international golf tournament today. Only Canada-seven strokes behind—of the other nations competing appeared to have a chance of depriving Australia of the honour of winning the cup a second time.

Australia first won the cup in 1954 at Montreal.

Australia has a 54-hole aggregate of 420 and Canada 427. Next are the United States and South Africa on 433, then Wales and England on 441. New Zealand has an aggregate 462 and is still in the middle of the field. John Kelly returned a 76 today for a three round 227, and Frank Buckler a 77 for an aggregate 235.

Peter Thomson with a 68 today —his third successive below-par round—regained the lead in the individual trophy. He leads by one stroke from the Canadian, Stan Leonard, who today had a birdie three on the eighteenth for a 69.

The United States, who had been expected to challenge Australia after yesterday’s scorching 65 by Sam Snead, fell away. Snead, troubled all day by a hook, recorded 73 for an individual total of 211, and Middlecoff continued to play disappointingly for 75. As well as fast greens and dry fairways badly in need of rain, the golfers also had to contend with sultry conditions with the temperature soaring above 90 regrees. A record crowd of 18,500 watched the golf today and the attendanbe for three days has been nearly 45,000. The biggest gallery followed the Australians and Canadians as they fought for the lead. They were treated to brilliant golf by Thomson and Leonard, with Nagle and Balding struggling all day. I The South Africans, Gary Player and Harold Henning, both returned workmanlike 71’s, outshining their American opponents, who recorded an aggregate 148. The South Africans are now equal third with the United States, but unless the Australians and Canadians fail badly tomorrow they have little chance of winning the cup. The best round today was a 67 by a Chilean, Enrique Orellana. The New Zealander, Kelly, showed- consistent form today when he scored 76 on this difficult Royal Melbourne course. He seemed well set for a good round when he had a birdie three on the second, but dropped a stroke on the ninth to be out in 34—par figures.

He crashed on the inward nine when he was one over at the twelfth, fourteenth, fifteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth for a 42. His round today gave him an aggregate of 227. Buckler was out in 37 and home in 40. He was again

troubled by the lightning fast greens. He sank a 20-footer for a birdie three at the fifth. Kelly, who comes from Auckland, was visibly upset as he left the eighteenth today. He told pressmen he believed he had played his best golf of the tournament, but that his putting had let him down badly on the last five holes.

He said: “I three-putted the fourteenth, fifteenth, and eighteenth. In the sixteenth I was in the rough with my second but came out well and was on for three. But it took me three putts to get down on this hole too.”

Kelly said he had never hit his irons and woods better. “I have never been a brilliant putter, but have never putted stupidly like this. Frank played a steady game. He never had any really good holes, but then he never had any bad ones,” Kelly said. Scores in the Canada Cup contest after the third round were: 420.—Australia (P. Thomson 67, 69, 68, 204; K.
