Military Cadets In High Schools

Sir. —It is regrettable that with new high schools opening in Christchurch we have not taken the opportunity to drop the now obsolete practice of conducting military training in schools. Considering all the talk of idealism in modern education, it is amazing how this old habit persists, undermining the positive and much more difficult task of training our youth to live as peaceful and useful world citizens. All our chromium plating and our plastic finishes are of little avail if we revert to the barbarism of war Is it too late to appeal to those who are shaping the policies of these schools (I understand they have, fairly wide discretion in this matter) to adopt a more enlightened approach?—Yours, etc., CONCERNED FATHER.
