Mew Guinea Earthquake

LAE, November 20. Thousands of square miles of Papua-New Guinea shook last night in a vicious earth tremor said to be as bad as any ever felt in the territory. No severe damage has yet been reported. In some places the tremor was measured as close to force six on the Mercali scale. Houses swayed dangerously on their foundations, water tanks burst glass doors shattered and the town lights of Lae went out The tremor was felt at Lae at 9.3 p.m. local time and at Wau, Bulolo, Popondetta, Mount Lamington, the Trobriand Islands and Berina, near Yule Island on the south coast of Papua, within tne next few minutes. Residents who have lived in the territory for up to 50 years said they had never felt a worse tremor. At Bulolo, the tremor lasted more than a minute. Houses and piers swayed vigorously.
