PORT CONCILIATION CHAIRMAN

Watersiders’ Vote Of No Confidence A vote «of no confidence in Mr R. H. Duff, chairman of the Lyttelton Port Conciliation Committee, was passed at a stop-work meeting of the Lyttelton Waterfront Employees’ Union. The reason for the vote, according to a statement by the union secretary (Mr F. J. Balchan) was a report on decisions received from Mr Duff in connexion with recent Port Conciliation Committee meetings. . The union has asked the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) to appoint an interim chairman so that “the machinery of disputes can function while the matters giving rise to the vote are investigated.” “As the union still has the right of appeal against my decision I am at a loss to understand the full reason for their decision, and I shall not make any further comment at this stage,” said Mr Duff when the union’s statement was referred to him yesterday.
