HIGH SCHOOL BATHS

Riccarton Plans Immediate steps are being taken by the Riccarton High School board of governors to have swimming baths installed. The board decided to seek Government approval on siting and on the alteration of an existing drain and it is then likely that tenders will be called for the pool itself. The job will be done in five stages at the following estimated costs:—Building in stormwater drain under the site, £80; construction of the pool 33 1-3 metres long, 42ft wide, with depths ranging from 3ft 3in at each end to 4ft Bin in the middle, £2700 (a friend of the school is arranging excavation free of charge); linking with water supply, £100; concrete surround, £200; filtration plant, £lBOO.

Of an estimated total cost of about £5OOO, the Parent-Teacher Association will provide about £l5OO on which there will be an equal Government subsidy and another £5OO subsidy will be available on the filtration plant. The board decided to defer a scheme for a separate diving pool because it thought a gymnasium should have next priority.
