“X-RAYS CAN BE DANGEROUS”
Plea By Scientist’s Wife (N.Z Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 12. A plea to women to have Xrays “only when absolutely necessary” was made yesterday by Mrs H. A. Pauling at the women’s section of the Australia and New Zealand Peace Congress. Mrs Pauling, wife of the American Nobel Prize winner, Professor Linus Pauling, said that women should not have X-rays “just for the sake of being Xrayed.” The rays were dangerous and could increase the chance of cancer in children. No reason existed why women should not know the simple ideas and truths of science and how they applied to themselves, she said. Women must be informed. It was not enough to talk about disarmament without actually knowing all about the subject, she said.
