(N.Z Press Association—CopyrigM) GROTON (Connecticut), Nov. 10. The world’s mightiest submarine, the nuclear-powered U.S.S. Triton, joined the United States battle forces today. The Triton, which recent trials proved could operate at high speeds, both surfaced and submerged, was commissioned at a dockside ceremony at the electric boat division of the General Dynamics Corporation. The 447-foot submarine, displacing 5900 tons, and costing 110,000,000 dollars, began, active service with a message of “congratulations and good luck” from President Eisenhower to Captain Edward L. Beach and the 172 other officers and men who will operate this first nuclear-powered radar picket vessel.
