FIRE DAMAGES DOBSON HOME

Occupant Absent At Time A Dobson home was badly damaged by fire about 11.30 on Wednesday night. A four-room-ed dwelling, it was a mass of flames when the Greymouth Fire Brigade arrived. Until a search of the remains of the house was possible, fears were held that the occupant. Mrs R. Newman, had been trapped inside. It was later discovered, however, that she had left two hours earlier to visit Ahaura. The call to the Wainui street house came when a passing miner saw smoke coming from the building. Men broke the window of Mrs Newman’s bedroom in an attempt to locate her, but this caused the house to burst into flames. Later the flames shot through the roof to be visible miles away. Firemen had to wear respirators to deal with the blaze, the heat which drove would-be helpers away. ' The fire apparently began near a sittingroom fireplace, and this room suffered most damage.
